One of the oldest inhabited places in the world Patna was established by the King of Magadha in 490 BC. Patna, also known as Pataliputra, was the capital of the Mahatma Empire through the Haryana, Nanda, Mauryan, Sunga, Gupta and Bala dynasties. The songbook was a place of learning and fine arts. It was home to many astronomers and scholars, including Aryabhata, Vatsyayan and Chanakya.
During the Mauryan period its population was about 400,000. Patna served as the seat of power and political and cultural center of the Indian subcontinent during the Mauryan and Gupta Empires. With the fall of the Gupta Empire, Patna lost its glory. The center of international trade was revived by the British in the 17th century.
Following the partition of Bengal in 1912, Patna became the capital of Bihar and Orissa.
Patna is a riverside town, which stretches for about 12 miles on the south bank of the Ganges. To the west of the old city is an area called Bangipur, and to the southwest is the spacious new capital with wide roads, shady lanes and new buildings.
Important among the modern structures of Patna are the Government House, the Assembly Rooms, the Oriental Library, the Medical College and the College of Engineering.
